Born in Lockdown by Tolu' A. Akinyemi

This is a vey unique poetry book that the reader simply cannot put down. This is a a series of snapshots of the time of COVID and everything that was a part of that - both the terrible parts and the parts that were not too bad. This book seems like a quick read and it is, but it is also very real about the struggles that most people faced during the pandemic and the lockdowns.  The author wrote about the vaccine, the struggles that families and others that lived together went through when there was no opportunity to hide or leave the other person/people.  I think that in the future this is going to be a unique historical piece that really lays out just what the COVID pandemic and lockdown did and meant to the people going through it.  This book will be published on September 8th, 2021 I received this book free from NetGalley and the publisher for free to review.  Five out of five stars

So Many Beginnings: A Little Women Remix by Bethany C. Morrow

I love the original Little Women by Louisa May Alcott and i love watching all the different interpretations of her work as well whether in print or in film. This is the first one that I have seen that has called itself a 'remix' and I really like that distinction because this story is not a retelling of Little Women or anything like that - this is something that is both new and fresh while still familiar in some way.  Spoiler warning!!!!! Not all of the characters from the original Little Women appear in this book - most notably Professor Bhaer, Mr. Brooks and Laurie's grandfather. There are characters that fulfill similar roles to Mr. Brooks and Laurie's grandfather - relationship wise in the book, but they are not identical and I enjoyed the characters that the author decided upon. There was not Professor Bhaer character at all in the book and his and Jo's story was not in the book which I was sad about because I love that love story. However, I also really enjoy...

Superdoom by Melissa Broder

I enjoy most poetry books if only for their very nature of seeing how the author puts their ideas into writing and the form of poetry that they create. However, as with all books, everyone connects with them differently and sometimes they just don't connect the same way as one hoped they would. That happened with this book. It was an intriguing book, but ultimately I just did not connect with it and enjoy the book the way that I wanted too.  It was a decent book, but unfortunately not one that I would reread.  I received this book free to review from NetGalley and Tin House Publishing and this review is of my own volition. The Dabblers Guide to Witchcraft by Fire Lyte

I decided to read this book because I am truly not familiar with nothing regarding these practices or the ideas behind them  aside from what I have seen online. While obviously this book is about witchcraft, it starts out with talking about the expectations and ideas that people have about witchcraft on both sides of the aisle and what it can actually be to the people that practice it.  This book was really out of my comfort zone, but it was really informative and I learned a lot. If anyone is interested in a very broad overview of the idea of witchcraft and the realities of it either personally or academically - I think this book is a very good starting point.  I received this book from NetGalley and the publisher free to review and this is my unbiased review.  Five out of five stars

Maiden Voyages by Sian Evans

This was not exactly the audiobook that I expected when I requested it but I found it interesting, intriguing and full of history. The narrator really sold the book and she sounded exactly like what someone would think the voice of a book about the transatlantic ships and voyages would sound like.  The women of history that the book talks about are truly fascinating and they range from the stories of the women who did what they had to do survive on the sea and the women who were powerful enough in their own way to do what they wanted to do.  One thing that really surprised me about the book was just how far away this era feels compared to present day, but just how much the events discussed in the book impacted the world in some very big ways. There are a few names that are discussed in the book that really surprised me.  It is definitely a longer audiobook at just over 10 hours, but it is an excellent 10 hours spent. This book will be published on August 10th, 2021. ...

20 Ways to Draw Everything

A fun drawing book - it isn't really a beginners drawing book because it focuses more on drawing the same thing with different levels of skill and detail and varying styles. If you have a youngster who is interested in drawing automobiles, planes or other vehicles - there are several sections about those types.  However, again this is not a learn how to draw book - this is more of a figure out how many different ways you can draw these things. A good drawing book, but definitely for a specific type of drawer.   Currently published and available.  I received this book free from NetGalley and the publishers to review.  4 out 5 stars.
