The secret of the Black Widow by Angelo Bandizol

Aggressively fine is the best way that I can think of this book. It has its fun moments and I finished it, but it is not a book that I will go back to in the future.  The writing style in very blunt and the formatting almost seems cramped when you read it which fits in with the vibe of the story itself.  It reads almost like a children's book and the synopsis seems like it could be that of a children's story, but there is both suggestive and profane language throughout the book. So it is definitely a book for older teens or adults.  This is a perfectly fine book, but it's just not one that I particularly enjoyed.  I received this book free from NetGalley and Ali Ribelli Edizioni to review and this is my honest review. Makeda: Queen of Sheba by Marlon McKenney

I requested this book because the art style drew me in. The artwork is a beautiful kind of art that can easily be visualized as an animated movie that would be truly stunning.  The story is also amazing! It is a children's story so it is a shorter story, but I could have read several more pages of it.  Makeda is a wonderful protagonist with flaws and everything. Her parents have their flaws and strengths in their own way. And the little flavoring of political intrigue is fun as well.  If you want to get kids into reading or introduce them to new stories, this is a wonderful story to do that with.  The authors notes are absolutely heartwarming as they talk about why they wanted to tell this story for their children.  I received this book free from NetGalley and Conscious Culture Publishing to review and this is my honest review. Botanical Curses and Poisons by Fez Inkwright

When one thinks of a fun and interesting audiobook to listen to, a compendium of botanical plants and poisons is not the first one that would come to mind. But this audiobook is absolutely worth it. Fez Inkwright is a phenomenal writer and Leslie Howard makes his work come to life in this audiobook.  This is not just a straight list of plants and poisons, but it also involves stories and examples of the usage of the poisons and how they became known as such. This is a surprisingly fun book to listen too and the reader gets to learn a lot about plants and poisons.  I received this audiobook free from NetGalley and Tantor Audio to review and this is my honest review.  Five out of five stars

Paper Girl and the Knives that Made Her by Ari B. Cofer

Heartbreaking and healing - the odes to survival and living a life true to yourself is what makes this book such a captivating read. There are moments where you feel like the author simply took a mirror to your own thoughts and feelings and made you really look at them.  But at the end, the paper girl survives and the knives that tried to kill her and destroy her did not do so and no matter what happens, they will never destroy her.  There are content and trigger warnings at the beginning of the book and they are well-deserved as there are topics in this work that are hard to read and deal with - so please pay attention to them.  I received this book free from NetGalley and Central Avenue Publishing to review and this is my honest review.  Five out of five stars

Mercenary Princess by Setta Jay

Honestly even without the racy sexual side of this story, it would still be an intriguing premise and idea that the author is writing about. Definitely not for under the age of eighteen ;) The sexual scenes do not detract from the overall plot or overwhelm which can be hard not to do in this type of genre. These scenes are fun, slightly unrealistic but written very well and the reader can't help but enjoy them.  One story aspect that I would love to read more about besides the rest of the series that I am eagerly looking forward too is a prequel about the start of the group/business that the readers are immediately introduced too by the protagonist. The idea of these rich girls becoming essentially vigilantes against this list of evil people and what they decided to do about it is such an intriguing concept.  This is a fun, sexy romp with some deep undertones and it just flies by and leaves you with a little tease of the future books that makes you want more.  ...

Manga Classics: Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery, Crystal S. Chan, Kuma Chan

The original story of Anne of Green Gables is without a doubt a classic and the whole series was one of my favorites growing up. I think that the art of manga is a excellent choice to put this book into. The character of Anne especially feels particularly fitted to manga and the energy that it exudes in its books.  This is a slightly abridged version of the book simply due to the difference from written word to manga but it retains the soul and heart of the original. This is a wonderful way to introduce others, especially kids to the wonders and beauty of classic literature in a format that might be a little more fun for them.  The authors that translated and edited Anne of Green Gables for the manga included a little section at the end of book talking about their process and how they decided to focus on certain topics of the original for the manga and even included characters sketches as well which were very interesting.  I received this book free from NetGalley an...

Interior Femme by Stephanie Berger

Books of poetry about women, femininity and what it means to be and have such things in the world are often the most haunting and heartbreaking works that one can read, And this book is no different.  This work focuses on the ideal of Western femininity which which as someone who lives in the West as it is called is very familiar with most of  different ideas and archetypes that are brought about in this book.  Absolutely recommend this book.  It is hard to believe that this is Stephanie Berger's first book and I can only imagine how the future books are going to be just as stunning as this one,  I received this book free from NetGalley and University of Nevada Press to review and this is my honest review.  Four out of five stars

Astrology Embroidery by Maya Hanisch

The colors and designs in the book are stunning. They are unique and bold. However, these are definitely not beginner friendly patterns for the most part. I would say that the majority of the patterns are advanced intermediate to expert in difficulty.  Farther along in book some of the patterns and instructions are not all the way completed, but once they are completed, they will be absolutely stunning both in the book and by whomever makes them.  If you or someone you know wants to expand their repertoire of embroidery project, this will be a perfect gift for that!  I received this book from from NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group to review and this is my honest review.  Four out of five stars

True Crime Story by Joseph Knox

This book sucks you in and never lets you go. There is such a masterful blending of storytelling that for a good portion of the book, I wasn't sure if I was listening to a fiction or non-fiction piece.  The voice actors of the story were incredible and the reader finds themselves hanging on to their words just waiting for them to respond to each other through the recorded interviews. Each of the characters are fully developed and sometimes you love them, sometimes you tolerate them and sometimes you just really really hate them.  The twist comes within the last few chapters of the book and truly makes the reader look back on the previous chapters and wonder how they didn't see it before.  This story is also available in a print format but I truly believe that the experience of listening to the audiobook makes the whole book come to life in a way that can't be accomplished through print. The voice actors really sell the story and Joseph Knox blends the ideas of fiction and...

Escaping the Body by Chloe N. Clark A stunning and beautiful work of art. Thankful that I got to experience how Chloe Clark writes and draws the reader into the softness and the harshness of the horror of knowing oneself.  I received this book free from NetGalley and Interstellar Flight Press to review and this is my honest review.  Four out of five stars A Little Soul by April Barnhill  Mental health and poetry has never seemed to be so interconnected in the literature world then they do know and to read and connect with different authors and poets in how they connect to such things.  Each poem and work is as unique as the writers and connects on varying levels with the reader.  I enjoyed reading this book and appreciate what the author has put into it.  I received this book free from NetGalley and April Barnhill to review and this is my honest review.  Four out of five stars A Sybil Society by Katherine Factor This was an excellent piece of wor...
